When using eye drops, it’s important to put them in correctly. This prevents eye infection and ensures that you are getting enough of each drop into your eyes. Here’s how to put in eye drops. Wash your hands with soap and water. Dry your hands with a clean towel. Shake the eye drop container. Remove the cap from the eye drop bottle and place it on a clean tissue. Don’t touch the dropper tip with your hand or any object. Eyedrops must stay clean. Tilt your head backward with both eyes open and look at a point on the ceiling or lie down on your back. Gently pull your lower eyelid down to form a pocket for the drop. Place your hand holding the bottle on top of the hand holding your eyelid to properly position and steady your hand. Turn the bottle upside down. Put the tip of the eye drop bottle over the pocket, but don’t let it touch your eyeball or lower lid. If the eye drop doesn’t immediately come out, gently squeeze the bottle to allow the drop to fall into the pocket. Close your eyes without blinking or squeezing them. Keep your eyes closed and gently blot away any drops outside of the eye with a clean tissue. Keep your eyes closed for at least two minutes or as prescribed by your eye doctor. Finally, replace the cap on the eye drop bottle.
