Have you ever wondered if staring at devices like your phone for too long actually harms your eyesight? Well, the common belief of having too much screen time causing one’s eyesight to worsen is actually a myth. However, while you don’t need to worry about wearing glasses because you’ve been on your phone for too long, You might need to worry about digital eye strain. You see, screens from devices like your phone emits light, which is made of many different colours. Blue light, a colour found on this spectrum, has a very short wavelength, which means it produces higher amounts of energy. Now because of this, when we look at our screens, almost all visible blue light passes through the cornea and the lens, reaching our retina. This causes decreased contrast in our eyes and causes damage to retinal cells, eventually leading to- yep. Digital eye strain. How do you know when your eyes are strained? You may have sore or irritated eyes, or have trouble focusing. And what can you do? Well, your eyes have been moving, taking in information- they just need a rest. Give your eyes a break from the screen and stare at something far away Or close your eyes for a while. That’s it folks. I hope you learnt a little something. See you next time!
